COMMISSION TO REVIEW FOUR CHARTERS

One Spot Remains for 2005-2006 School Year

BOISE - The Idaho Charter School Commission will consider four charter school petitions and receive updates from two Commission-approved schools at its meeting April 14 at Boise State University. While the Commission has four schools before them for authorization, only one can open for the 2005-2006 school year. Idaho State law allows six new charter schools to open per school year and five schools have already been approved.

The meeting begins at 8 a.m. in the Jordan Ballroom at BSU. Commissioners will re-evaluate petitions for Renaissance School of the Arts and the Academy at Roosevelt Center (ARC), both in Pocatello, Taylor’s Crossing Charter School in Idaho Falls, and INSPIRE, a proposed virtual charter school. All four schools have presented information to the Commission previously.

Renaissance School of the Arts proposed curriculum utilizes the arts to teach Idaho standards in grades 7 to 12. Petitioners approached the Pocatello-Chubbuck School District for authorization and the district referred the petition to the Idaho Charter School Commission. The school first came before the Commission at its February meeting.

The ARC would serve 250 students in the Pocatello area in grades K-12 and teach Idaho standards utilizing online curriculum. Petitioners approached the Pocatello-Chubbuck School District for authorization and the district referred the petition to the Idaho Charter School Commission. Petitioners presented their charter to the Commission in March.

Taylor’s Crossing School petitioners appeared before the Commission in February where they agreed to a 60-day extension to allow the school to work with the Bonneville School District on the petition. The school district denied the petition April 6.

INSPIRE Public Charter School would serve Idaho students in grades K-12. The online charter school would offer the Connections Academy curriculum. INSPIRE came before the Commission for the first time in March.

COMPASS Public Charter School in Boise and Falcon Ridge Public Charter School in Kuna will update the Commission on their progress as they prepare to open their doors this fall.
